As many of you know, I’ve been serving as director of a men’s sober house—Solutions of Lawrence—for the past year. We’ve been operating at about 60-75% capacity on average over the course of the year—much of that is due to an initial delay in getting men who are strong in their willingness to stay sober into the house; much of it is simply the reality of the disease of alcoholism/addiction.
This has put us in a position where—including start-up costs—we are $4000 in the hole in our first year. We estimate that hole to be approximately $2500 in the second year and $500 in the third year. Our goal would be to have the house fully self-supporting by the fourth year, though it is entirely possible that we will be able to get it there sooner than that.
As you all know, this house is filling a void in Lawrence, and even in one year, there are men whose lives have been completely transformed by the opportunity it provides.
We faced a decision recently—either we close the house and give the current residents 3 months to find alternative housing; or we stay open and attempt to raise money to supplement our costs. I decided it was worth it to attempt to raise the money to cover last year’s debt and the estimated debt for the next 2 years.
I have set up a GoFundMe page to assist in helping me raise those funds. If any of you are able to contribute even just a few dollars, I would be forever indebted to you.
