The DiManno family have turned a huge corner and our Owen is coming back to us. We could only try to feel and imagine what Rebecca and Steve must be going through watching their child fight for his life. It is the genuine regard and care for this family that made it that much harder to put what was happening in its place. We connected as a community and felt the power of such. Rebecca and Steve are now on the side of knowing that they will slowly but surely have their baby back . Lauren and Emma will get their brother back. This is all going to take time, love and determination . They got that for sure!
The DiMannos have had enough to worry about. We have all shared our hearts and our tears in this experience. Our greatest gift of emotional support as a community will hold them up. Our financial gift will help lessen the worry with some of the obvious and hidden costs that they will have going forward. Many of you have asked me how you can help and what you can contribute. Owen has turned a corner and we can support in a way that will help them as a family, so they can focus on getting our Owen back to being a healthy teenager again.

Owen is getting settled in after his move to the children’s rehab centre. He has started therapy and is able to transfer himself from the wheelchair to his bed! School work has also been introduced. His schedule between rehab and school is full everyday. He is still paralyzed on the left side and will be wearing his helmet to protect his head for some time to come. The hope is that he will soon be able to come home for a weekend! Plans for modifying the house are already underway which will start with the installation of a new ramp.

The family sends blessings to you all and are feeling so blessed themselves.

With gratitude,

Kathleen

We got to see Owen last night and the progress has been phenomenal! He still has a long way to go, but with his determination he’s well on his way. This journey has been one that has touched all of us and it is a great feeling to know that he is in the best hands possible. Sick Kids is absolutely amazing, but so is his family and community standing behind him. He’s been fitted for his helmet that he will wear until he is able to have the bone from his skull put back in. It is hoped that he will be moved to the Children’s Rehab in the next couple of weeks where he will have full time therapy as well as being introduced back to his school work. His attitude is incredibly positive which is being nurtured by his amazing parents, family and community. From Rebecca, Steve and the family...sending lots of love and gratitude your way.

Owen has now been fitted with a custom wheelchair. He is a naturally curious kid, so it’s good that he has a new set of wheels and a driver to help him take look around. He had a sherbet yesterday and thought it was the best thing ever ! His sense of humour is in full force. He is such an amazing boy and a beautiful soul.

These past 12 days have felt like an eternity. Rebecca and Steve have demonstrated the parental strength that is needed in this unimaginable situation. We have all been touched by this. So many people have stepped up to support this family, not just in the generous donations, but in spirit and love. We all should be very proud to be a part of this kind and generous collective called community.

Owen has been moved from the ICU to the Neuro floor! It was very overwhelming and exciting all at once. His speech is getting better with everything he says..and he’s saying a lot! (Everything that’s been held in while asleep this past week is now coming out!) He’s aware of what happened. His humour is bubbling over. There’s still no movement on the left side, but possible sensation on the left leg. They’re still treating the pneumonia and he’s getting better with breathing.

He will need lots of time to try and understand what happened. We’ve had over a week to understand this horrible ride and he’s only had hours.

I want to thank you all for your tremendous support and continued prayers.

For those of you less familiar to this campaign:

The DiManno family are dear friends of ours and we are all part of an amazing hockey community in Oshawa, Ontario. Owen DiManno plays for Oshawa Minor Bantam A hockey . Owen is 14 years old and is our son’s best friend . He had a massive stroke on April 12, 2018 after completing a 1500 metre track and field race. He’s in critical condition at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital. Owen has been fighting for his life and is now starting to show signs of improvement. From what they can see, they predict Owen will walk again, have some use of his left arm and he will be able to speak. These are all blessings that will come with time. Owen will eventually be moved to the Neurological Unit at Sick Kids where they will try to figure out what caused the stroke. Once Owen is stable and will no longer need medical interventions, he will be moved to a Children’s Rehab in Toronto. All funds through this campaign will be used to support taking care of Owen and the family during this time as well as future needs that may arise with his recovery and rehabilitation. It is also hoped that the DiManno family will be able to derive some joy from the monies raised once Owen is back home where he belongs.
