Makenna is our smart, strong, independent first born. She is a competitive rock climber, a Brownie Girl Scout, and a fantastic big sister to Whitney and Payson.
On September 29th she began running a fever. Over the next 10 days Makenma was extremely fatigued, had a fever that came and went, leg and shoulder pain, eye pain, and some bruising. On October 8th, she started having pain in her belly. We took her to the emergency room to get a clear answer on why she had been sick for almost 2 weeks.
At the emergency room, Makenna was diagnosed with leukemia. We were transferred to Children's Medical Center, where Makenna underwent a series of tests to determine what type of leukemia she had and what her treatment would be.
On Saturday October 10th, the doctors confirmed through a bone marrow biopsy that she has Acute Lymphoblastic Luekemia. Over the next three years, Makenna will have 18 spinal taps, numerous rounds of chemotherapy, steroids, and several bone marrow biopsies. The prognosis for A.L.L. is good, but it will be a long road. She will have weekly clinic visits for chemo and spinal taps as well as several hospital stays.
We have set up this page for those who would like to help with medical and prescription expenses. Since her treatment is so long, we will be paying the maximum out of pocket for our insurance for several years to come. We are so thankful for all that our friends and family have done for us and hope this gives those of you who want to help more a way to do so!
Update: we learned a few weeks after Makenna's diagnosis that she has a genetic mutation (iAmp21) in her leukemia cells that make them harder to treat. She has been moved to the very high risk protocol. This means her chemo and will more intensive and longer and her prognosis is not quite as good. We are praying that remission will happen quickly!
