Purse Power Project

Donation protected
Right after my husband and 17-year-old triplets, I care deeply about two things -- equitable treatment of women and reducing domestic violence.

With a lot of help from friends, colleagues, husbands and children, my sisters and I put together Purse Power.

Its purpose is to encourage women and thoughtful men to use our collective trillions of dollars of purchasing power to buy products and services from companies that actively support women. We’re not talking about companies who talk about gender equity and diversity in hiring. We’re talking about companies who are actually doing it.

In order to get the word out, we passed out 30,000 "Purse Power - We have it. Let’s use it." buttons at the Women’s March in Washington, DC and Denver, CO on January 21 and about 11,500 pins in cities throughout the US on March 8th, International Women's Day. People loved them!

We continue to give away buttons for free and need help paying for them. We also need help paying for the new website http://pursepower.com

In the United States, women control or influence between 73% and 85% of overall consumer purchasing decisions, own 51% of the stock, hold 50% of the wealth and are the primary customers for most American companies. But less than 20% of public companies have women on their boards of directors, fewer than 6% have women CEOs and most pay women less. That’s just plain wrong.

Women have extraordinary purchasing power and trillions of dollars of leverage. If women buy products and services from companies that really support them, glass ceilings will shatter. The plan is for Purse Power to become a self-sustaining entity that will share its profits with battered women’s shelters and domestic violence prevention programs. But first we need help paying for buttons and the website.   We would be very grateful for your help.

Here are the wonderful volunteers that helped us pass out the pins:

And here are some of the awesome marchers that wore them:
