Joseph Porcu's Eagle Scout Project
My name is Joseph Porcu. I am a proud alumni of Snug Harbor Little League, where I started playing baseball at age 4. Through the years, I have made many friends through the Little League at Snug and I am truly grateful for all the life lessons I learned from my coaches and fellow baseball players at Snug. I learned how to win and how to lose with dignity, I learned the importance of teamwork and good sportsmanship and I learned what an important role Snug Harbor Little League plays in our community. It is with this spirit in mind that I wanted to find a way to give back to this wonderful organization that played such a vital role in my childhood.
As a prospective Eagle Scout, I wanted to develop a project for Snug Harbor Little League that demonstrates pride and love of my country and honors civil servants who lost their lives in the line of duty.
My goal is to raise $4,000 in order to purchase and erect a 35 foot nautical flag pole for Sailor's Snug Harbor Little League. This project includes beautification of the site, purchase of all materials, assembly and erection of the flag pole. This flag pole would serve to memorialize civil servants (such as firefighters, police officers and other peace officers, E.M.S., sanitation, etc.) who lost their lives in the line of duty. As many Snug Harbor Little League families are employed as civil servants, this would be a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by many members of our community.
I would just like to update everybody. The flag pole was erected over 2 days on 11/11/15 and 11/14/15. On 04/02/16, Sailors Snug Harbor Little League, together with the New York Fire Department and the members of Troop #77 dedicated the Flag pole to FDNY Lt. Gordon "Matt" Ambelas of Ladder #119 who was tragically killed in the line of duty on 07/05/14 in Brooklyn. Lt. Ambelas played at SSHLL as a youth, and even played on their 1986 All Star team that captured the Island Championship.
Upon completion of the project, my final paper work and letters of reccomendation were submitted, and my Eagle Scout Board of Review was held on 05/16/16, at which point I attained the prestigous and rank of Eagle Scout.
Once again, thank you to everyone that was involved. I could not have done this alone.
Yours in Scouting,
Joseph Peter (J.P. Porcu)
