Rachel Goes to VONA-2016

I am a rebel, one of the few Ghanaian children growing up in the Bronx who refused to become a doctor, nurse, lawyer or accountant. I decided to become a poet and sell my soul to words. A few days ago, I learned of my acceptance to VONA/Voices Workshop, the only multi-genre workshop for writers of color in the nation. As an emerging writer of color this is a big deal!
I have been writing since I moved from Ghana to the Bronx in 2005. I write about home, the language, culture, and identity displacement. But, I also write about events and ideas that shake the nerves in my bone. You can find more about myself and my work on my blog http://theeyeofalion.blogspot.com/
I am currently an MFA candidate at StonyBrook Southampton with a concentration in poetry. Attending this conference will mean a promise of hope as I put together poems and ideas for my first poetry manuscript Original Sin which tells the story of Adam & Eve's attempt to return back to the Garden of Eden. It will also be a huge source of encouragement for the risk I took to taking a different career path.
I have come to understand that being being a rebel has it's up and downs, like the cost of attending this conference. From now until June, I am seeking to raise up to $1,650 which will cover conference fees, room & board and cost of flight. I am so eager to meet with a group of talented writers who, like myself, are in pursuit of their passion.
I am so grateful for however much you will consider giving towards my attending this conference. To show my appreciation, I will be writing poems daily on my blog to every single person that gives, even if you're an anonymous donner.
