A Travelling girl's story
The story is told through the eyes of young Traveller girls who are struggling to get an education. These girls face discrimination on an everyday basis but are feisty, funny and full of life. The O'Briens, the Slatterys and the Hegartys have been fighting for a secure place for their families for over 10 years. Yet a combination of conflict with the settled community, which no longer relies on their labour, and a pervasive discrimination "“ from the Council to local shopkeepers "“ has left the community devastated. John O'Brien will soon be expected to provide for his own family. In the film you will see him at Appleby Horse Fair. The struggle of these three families typifies the situation that Irish Travellers and Roma face up and down the country. They ask you to support this project with a donation that will fund the film. The film is intended to help all those who are fighting for a place to call home and will be used as an educational tool.
Donations of £25 and you will receive an invitiation to the Henley Horsefair to meet the family as a thank you.
Donations of £100 and you will be invited to Smithy Fen in Cambridge for a traditional Traveller meal with the families who you have helped.
All donations of £1 and above receive the thanks of all of the families in the film.
Appeal hearing over and the families await the decision (which could take several months). UN day of Diversity march in London saw the residnts marching under the Smithy Fen banner calling for equality for all. Only £338 to reach our target of £3000. If we raise more it will be used for legal fees that are outstanding.. please help us get past our target! Thanks to all who have given so generously!
Day 2 of the appeal hearing for the three families. This is a gruelling process where the aesthetic of the landscape is weighed against the extreme need of the applicants. Clips and audio are being recorded - which may be used in sections of the film. Thanks from the Travellers involved for your generosity. Please continue to encourage much needed donations from friends and interested parties. Smithy Fen Travellers will be marching in London alongside other Travellers/Roma at the head of the march against fascism on Saturday in central London!
18th of March !
Another big thank you to everyone who has supported this project from the families - who are preparing to defend themselves at the appeal which begins 15th March. Please help them to reach their target!
We have now raised over 1,000 - huge thanks from the families!
I have been asked to make clear that the 250 donation listed was also a collection of monies from Travellers at Smithy Fen site
