Who are we?
We are Casco Bay High School's class of 2017. We are a group of driven, intelligent, curious, hopeful high school juniors. We seek to make a change in the world, and we need your help!

Class of 2017 during our freshman year (2013)

What is Junior Journey?
The mission of the Junior Journey is to involve CBHS juniors in a one-week, cross-cultural learning experience that will expand students’ sense of both their world and who they are through service and adventure learning. Past juniors have travelled to West Virginia, Mississippi, and New York City to build or re-build homes in devastated areas while also telling the untold and inspirational stories of locals through oral histories and brief films. This year, the class of 2017 will be headed to Detroit for a week in April 2016, from the 10th to the 17th to assist with blight removal and community development, as well as to document the stories of people living and thriving in Detroit.

Why Detroit?
Detroit's story is told across the country – its rise is seen as a symbol of the American dream and the power of industry; its fall viewed as a prominent example of the hardships facing the country today. The media often focuses on Detroit's highs and lows, while the story of its resurgence gets far less airtime but needs to be heard. The documentaries we film on our trip will help broadcast this untold story.
Up until Junior Journey, the class of 2017 will spend time in our humanities classes examining current issues related to social and political change, and will explore ways to address these issues. Junior Journey will provide us with a chance to face the results of these injustices firsthand as well as to experience how we can make an impact.

Service Project: Motor City Blight Busters
While in Detroit, CBHS students will work with Motor City Blight Busters, a community-based nonprofit organization deticated to the revitalization of Detroit. Blight Busters removes blighted and abandoned houses from Detroit and aims to construct new homes and busnesses in the city. CBHS juniors will assist with this organization's work in rebuilding Detroit. More information about Blight Busters can be found on their website.

FUNDING:
Buses, shelter, food . . . . There are many things that go into getting 100 students from Portland, Maine, to Detroit, Michigan, and back. And our teachers have not been shy about telling us the rule: no funds, no trip.

ANY donation, small or large, gets us one step closer to our goal of $5,000 raised through online funding. We have already raised over $50,000, and the money needed for the trip to happen - but we are not yet fully funded. The remaining few thousand dollars raised are incredibly helpful when covering student scholarships and remaining incidental costs.

Again, any amount is greatly appreciated, and if you would like we have a couple of perks available, including a complete DVD of our documentaries once they are finished, and a thank you shoutout at one of our infamous school meetings. Feel free to contact us with any questions about money and donations.

Why should you care?
Because you know us. Well, you most likely don’t know all of us, but we are high school students, and you probably know some of those. You know how hard it is for high schoolers to learn in traditional settings, both socially and academically. And Casco Bay High School’s Junior Journey is an amazing opportunity for students to put themselves out there and learn from the real world and real people, fostering real friendships along the way. Also, you know what it’s like to feel excited and inspired about the future of the world, and you care about exciting and inspiring youth, and giving the next generation an educational experience that will help shape them into motivated, intelligent leaders of tomorrow.

How can you help?
Besides donating the obvious way, we could use your help to spread the word about our campaign. Please share us on Facebook or Twitter or whatever you use, and tell a few friends to check us out. On behalf of the class of 2017,  we thank you so much for your generosity and support.
