A New Kidney for Maya

Donation protected
Where to begin? Some of you may already know the whole story. Our family has a long history with kidney failure. Our mom's kidneys failed soon after Maya was born, and we grew up around dialysis, and the associated hospital visits. When we were 9 and 7 years old, our mom had her first transplant. Our lives were transformed by the freedom from dialysis and the renewed energy in our mom. It was an amazing gift of new life. A few years later, the new kidney failed and we were back to a life of dialysis. Mom was more fortunate than most, and we experienced the gift of life once again, when she received a new kidney. Once again, we were granted more time with mom, and renewed energy for life. We've been grateful, and she continues to live free of dialysis, because of that amazing gift.

Maya has always taken after mom in many ways. Unfortunately, she also inherited the gene for kidney disease. Her kidneys finally failed in 2013. She was started on dialysis. She hooks up to her machine every night, and is stuck to it while it cleans the toxins (and everything else) out of her system. She has to connect a few times during the day as well. She's been zapped of all her energy, and she gets quite I'll from the build up of dangerous levels of potassium, and other minerals. Her health has deteriorated right before our eyes, and we are left helpless, as we wait, impatiently, for a transplant to be available at UCSF.

As a mother of 2 young girls, it's been difficult for Maya to be all that they need her to be for them. She has suffered immensley, and in different ways than our mother did.

When she was put on the waiting list for a kidney, she was informed by her nephrologist (kidney specialist) that it could be 8-10 years before she would hear about a kidney. This is the current average at UCSF. She had all her blood work and labs done to be assessed and put on the waiting list in 2013.

Since then, she was informed last summer, that UC Davis has a much shorter waiting list, and similar success rates. They have a 3-4 years average waiting time for a kidney to come available. We were stunned, and somewhat disappointed, that we hadn't heard this sooner. She called UC Davis immediately and asked for an appointment. She's finally been granted an appointment for appointment consultation and for lab and blood work, to be put on the list at UC Davis. There is also the possibility that she could transfer the time she has waited at UCSF to the UC Davis waiting list!!!

Now we come to the reason for the donation request. Maya is covered by Medicare and MediCal. Unfortunately, they will only cover the lab work required for getting on the waiting list, ONCE! This means that she will have to pay approximately $2000 - 2500 to get in at UC Davis. Her appointment is set for April 1, 2016. We are anxious and eager to get her seen and on the waiting list. It would bring us that much closer to getting her a new kidney. Maya survives, financially, on SSI, and by living with our mother (who is also receiving disability income). There is no way she will be able to afford to pay the amount they are requesting.

This is why we are seeking your help. If you can contribute to our goal, we would be forever grateful! We need to raise funds for theheheyhehehe co-pay, as well as for travel to and from UC Davis for the number of to me she will need to visit for pre-op appointments.

Thank you for reading, and considering. This is something that could change all of our lives, and we hope for the best!
