Great Lakes Mastiff Rescue is asking for donations to help us continue rescuing mastiffs in need.  We are one of the largest mastiff rescues in the country, and as the economy has fallen, more and more mastiffs have been surrendered or abandoned due to job loss, home foreclosures, and medical issues. 

2015 has been an especially tough year for GLMR due to all the high medical mastiffs we have taken in.  We have never turned away a dog for medical reasons, however, the larger the dog... the higher the vet bills.  We are struggling to stay afloat and  desperately need your help to keep rescuing these gentle giants.  Every donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. 

Here are a few of the mastiffs we've taken in this year:

Penelope:  $9,000 in medical bills
9 month old Penelope Jane saw 4 different veterinarians who conducted all kinds of blood, urinary tests, and x-rays, but no one could determine why she was vomiting and had diarrhea until one day it manifested into closed pyometra. Penelope was near death and we nearly lost her. She required tube feedings several times a day and was in ICU.

Diesel:  Starved, neglected and abandoned to die
Diesel was tied outside to a shed for the past 3 years with barely any food, and survived the last 2 bitterly cold winters with no shelter.  When a good samaritan finally brought him inside their home, Diesel was skeletal.  GLMR placed him in a foster home where they immediately fell in love with his gentle, loving personality and adopted him.  After all he'd suffered, this brave boy never gave up on people.  After only a few months, Diesel's poor body suddenly went into emergency kidney failure and he passed away.  At least his last few months, Diesel was tenderly cared for and knew he was dearly loved.  Rest in peace, sweet Diesel!

Alpha:  $2,500 in medical bills
Alpha was surrendered due to ongoing health urinary infections.  When he came in to GLMR, he was urinating pure blood and needed major vet care.  Alpha was diagnosed with cystinuria and will require eating a special, prescription food for the rest of his life.

Zeus:  $2,500 in medical bills
Zeus was surrendered when his owner took him to the vet and learned he had a life-threatening form of cystinuria and required immediate surgery.  Zeus’ condition was so severe that they had to give him blood transfusions.   Luckily, GLMR was able to provide him with the medical treatment required to save his life.  Zeus will also require eating a special, prescription food for the rest of his life.

Titan & Lola:  $4,500 in medical bills
Titan and Lola are a pair of bonded siblings that came in due to financial reasons.  Titan is being treated for Lyme's disease and requires expensive medication for 30 days, and then additional testing and treatment.  Lola tore her cruciate ligament and will need to undergo TPLO surgery on her leg with a recovery time of 8-12 weeks.

Diesel:  $3,000 in medical bills
Our other "Diesel" also tore his ACL and will need to have TPLO surgery, as well, with a recovery time of 8-12 weeks.

The dogs highlighted above alone cost GLMR over $20,000 in medical bills in 2015.  We have many more mastiffs that we took in this year that needed vaccinations, spay/neuter, and various lesser medical issues cared for.  Although we charge adoption fees, we usually spend more per dog than the fee covers.  We also hold various fundraising events throughout the year, however, this is not enough.  We are a purely non-profit organization that is composed of a wonderful group of dedicated people who volunteer their time, and open their hearts and homes.
