Opening an All-Ages Venue-San Jose
Fortunately, the Cine Mexico is beginning to shine again as the new owner has been steadily putting in the labor to restore it, and there is still momentum and community support behind moving forward with opening a new space that we may call our own: this fundraiser will track the donations made toward our goal. More updates will be forthcoming!
Fundraising efforts toward a new space have resumed, and several benefit shows have been held in the past few months with more to come.
For those who have been asking, we are no longer pursuing the Cine Mexico Theater on E. Santa Clara St. as the previous owners decided to sell to another party (with considerably deeper pockets)! However that could have been for the best, considering the issues the building had. To my knowledge, the current owners made the repairs that were needed.
We are now setting our sights on obtaining a smaller space that can be sustainable for the long-term: our current fundraising goal is $10,000, which is estimated to be enough to offset initial rental costs, city permit fees and renovation. A space has not yet been confirmed, but we will update on the search as we get closer to our goal!
There is bittersweet news. I spoke with the owners of Cine Mexico earlier today and they had good news for the future of the building, though it wasn’t the news I was expecting: the good news is that Cine Mexico is set to be renovated and come back to life as a venue.
However, they informed that it would be by a different party, as they made the decision to sell the theater to a buyer that had the upfront capital to buy it outright. Originally, we had permission to raise a specific deposit amount of $6,000 to gain access to the building to make ongoing repairs as needed until it could be re-opened, but increasing financial stress on the owners definitely influenced their decision to accept a buyer’s offer to purchase the theater. Earlier, they disclosed that the City had increased existing fines and penalties related to code & permit violations to nearly $10,000, a cost that would need to be taken care of on top of the cost for repairs, then a representative of the City from Councilmember Liccardo’s office later advised me that the total penalties were much higher. I kept my hopes up that the penalties could be resolved as the owners were in a court appeals process to contest them or have them dropped, but they have now taken that burden off their shoulders by selling to a party that is willing or able to afford resolving those issues on their own.
I’m surprised but not entirely saddened, as this means Cine Mexico will not sit neglected any longer and the benefits that have been held so far have been successful in raising over $3,000 to this date (the fundraiser page will reflect this new total shortly, as more was raised from our last benefit on May 17th at SJ Rock Shop)!
For everyone that donated either directly through the gofundme fundraiser page or attending a benefit show, your donations can still go toward opening a new all-ages venue in San Jose. If this is something many of us agree to pursue, this group can be renamed and similarly updated as we work on finding a new space.
***If you had personally wanted your contribution to benefit Cine Mexico Theater alone:
Please feel free to contact me either on facebook or via the gofundme page and your contribution will be returned or reimbursed to you.***
Thank you everyone for your outpouring of support!
This would be a great feature for the music scene of San Jose. I'm optimistic about this building being open eventually for many artists who'd like to spread their art out, hope to see this venue be in great use!
This is the theater that should have been voted as historic by the San Jose panel, not the Century 21-23 domed theaters that are in what is considered a wealthy area. This theater could bring great things to the community.
Good luck on your preservation efforts! Communities need more places like this. Kudos to you and good luck on saving this gem! A look back: http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/2811
