Peter McDonald – Father of Nine – Carcinoid Cancer
Yes – there really is a McDonald Farm!
For those who don't know, Peter was diagnosed with late-stage Carcinoid Cancer a few months ago, and his health has deteriorated rather quickly. He's been in a wheelchair for the last several months.
After marrying lovely Shannon, they settled in Romulus, NY where they bought a 220 acre farm and raised free range chickens, pigs, cattle and sheep. Their produce was known in all the surrounding counties; especially at the popular Ithaca Farmers Market.
Their nine children were all home schooled by Shannon and everyone pitched in and worked all aspects of the farm. It was a wonderful experience to watch and take it all in. Whenever we came up from Florida for the summer, the very first thing we did was to go to McDonald Farm to stock up on all of the wonderful organic, natural and healthy produce and, of course, to watch all the hustle and bustle of harvesting everything. It was quite an experience!
Aside from the farm, Peter and his daughter formed a bluegrass band famously known as REBECCA COLLEEN AND THE CHORE LADS. They have performed all over New York and beyond for about eight years.
At the end of 2014, they downsized their farm operation from 220 acres to about 11 acres and they are as active as ever. When I visited in June, a shipment of 200 chicks was enroute! 400 new chicks arrived along with 200 turkeys.
Peter's diagnosis came toward the beginning of 2015.
Three of the kids have left the nest and the rest continue to help out on the family farm.

Not all was rosy though. Peter’s sister Kate passed away from ovarian cancer. Brother Danny, a rising Broadway star passed away from brain cancer and father Jim passed away from prostate cancer.
Peter is fighting this vigorously but no one family can handle the expenses involved in treatment of this kind.
We reach out to all to help them with the financial strain that has become a burden. Anything you can help out with will be gratefully appreciated. Let’s all band together!
