Legal Empowerment Brigade to Panama

Dear all,
Together with 14 other law students from King's College London, we will be taking our journey to Panama to provide pro-bono legal consulting to rural communities. We will primarily work with rural communities that are under-resourced and largely unaware of their own legal rights. Furthermore, we will provide capacity building and education-based workshops on various legal concepts. As an individual, we also intend to learn more about the obstacles to justice and the culture of legal misinformation in rural communities.
I feel very fortunate to have grown up in a country where education is accessible to everyone and to have a family which has supported me throughout my law degree. I believe that this project gives me a chance to help others with the knowledge I have gained and to bring them in a stronger position when their rights are breached. Governments are more able to corrupt and deceive communities that live in a rural area and have had no education about rules that may apply and the rights that they are entitled to. Therefore, collaborating with Panamanian lawyers, sharing our knowledge and bringing in other perspectives will make them less vulnerable to abuse or neglect.
The course of legal empowerment is organised by the NGO Global Brigades. However, in order to fund this free legal clinic for the local community, we need some help! All donations will go directly towards trip expenses, learning material and the local community. We are grateful for every little bit!

***ABOUT GLOBAL BRIGADES***
Global Legal Empowerment Brigades is an international movement of students and attorneys providing legal education and financial resources for vulnerable families to resolve legal challenges. They focus our work on women in remote, rural, and under resourced communities who would otherwise have limited to no access to legal resources. Volunteers facilitate legal clinics with lawyers to provide pro-bono consulting and the financial resources for community members to help resolve cases. In conjunction with the Legal Empowerment Program, Global Brigades also supports communities with healthcare, economic development, clean water and sanitation projects, and uniquely implements these programs in a holistic model to meet a community’s health and economic goals. Their model systematically builds community ownership and collaboratively executes programs with the end goal of sustainably evolving to a relationship of impact monitoring.
