Building Reading Heroes: Every Hero Has a Story!
I am . . . a reader. I am . . . a learner. I am . . . a Harbison West Reading Hero!
Reading is critical to ensure students are successful in school and in life. In our world today, many children and adults struggle with reading. Nearly 40 percent of U.S. 4th graders don’t achieve basic levels of reading proficiency. Students who make achievement gains during the school year often experience losses in achievement over the summer. Achievement loss during the summer is, on average, equal to one month of instruction. For students who don't have access to books, the loss is even bigger. So what are we going to do?
Concerned parents have teamed up with school staff to provide all 618 students five new books to engage and challenge them during the summer of 2016. Yes, we will raise $9,000 and provide 2,000 new books for all students in prekindergarten through fifth grade!
We need you to be a hero in a young student’s life. For just $15 a student can select three new books for reading during the summer of 2016. They will also complete a reading response journal on each book they read. Parents will also participate - they will receive a reading resource guide and learn simple, new ways to support their children's summer reading!
The Harbison West family is committed to helping all of our students experience reading success. Please make a donation to our Building Reading Heroes initiative and join us. Together, we are all Harbison Heroes!
So donate right now! $15 can reverse a student's summer slide and turn it into a summer stride! Now that's a great return on your investment.
