Southern Youth in Motion (SYiM)
is a Mamow Sha-way-gi-kay-win: North-South Partnership for Children (NSP)
youth-led and art-based initiative. SYiM started as an advocacy campaign to
raise awareness of the living conditions of First Nations in Northern Ontario,
but has now grown into a place for youth from the North and South to come
together, share their experiences, and learn from one another through the
Arts.
We use the Arts as a vehicle for self-expression, and to provide a platform for youth to discuss challenges they face, but also share their goals, dreams and aspirations with their peers. This year, NSP has invited 20 First Nations youth from Northern Ontario and 20 youth from Southern Ontario for a two-day Showcase at Ryerson University on December 14 and 15.
During the Showcase, all the youth will have the opportunity to participate in a series of art-based workshops (beading, drumming, dance, photography, and visual arts), which are co-facilitated by a southern artist and northern artist. The youth will also be able to present any of their previous work (paintings, drawings, poetry, music, dance) with the larger group. Our hope is that the SYiM Showcase will stimulate relationship building between the North and South, as well as encourage cross-cultural youth-to-youth mentorship and knowledge sharing.
Due to the high cost of flights for youth travelling from Northern Ontario (approximately $2,000 for a round-trip flight from a First Nations community to Thunder Bay), we are seeking your assistance with the northern travel costs. We have set the goal of $2,000, which will cover the cost of one youth's flight to Thunder Bay, and NSP will cover the cost of their flight from Thunder Bay to Toronto.
We would like to thank you for your support, as we would not be able to continue this work without the help from caring individuals such as yourselves!
