Historic Preservation & Restoration

Tax deductible
Established in 1990, the San Tan Historical Society continues under a clear mission – to collect, preserve, document and display the histories and artifacts of the Chandler Heights, Combs, Higley and Queen Creek Communities; moreover, to facilitate the collection of items and to encourage and educate the public to respect and participate in the conservation of the history of our past.

The San Tan Historical Society is your caretaker for our community’s history and is solely operated by volunteers.  Despite annual grant opportunities through the Town of Queen Creek and the Union Pacific Foundation, in addition to collaboration on projects with the School District and local chapters of organizations like Questers and the Arizona Archaeological Society, we occasionally find ourselves challenged when funding is needed for significant restoration and preservation projects.

There are currently two priority projects that will benefit from your finanicial support:
- the relocation and preservation of a historic citrus grove wind machine to the museum grounds.  A common landmark when the area was rich in citrus groves, this is the only one that is still in existence locally.  The owner has sold the property and is donating the 45' high wind machine to the historical society museum.  By having this historic treasure on the museum grounds, we can ensure that it's available for future generations to appreciate.  Project cost is estimated at $2,500.
- the restoration of the historic Rittenhouse Elementary School wood floors.  Now the home of the historical society museum, these unique hardwood tongue and groove floors have survived the traffic of hundreds of children and damage from numerous floods since it was first constructed in 1925.  Project cost is estimated at $47,500.

Your support will ensure that the community will have an active and community based link to our history - from its roots in agriculture; to the development of the community with schools, homes, and businesses; to the ever changing influences of the community.
