High Desert Montessori's Urban Farm

High Desert Montessori School (HDMS) is a public charter and 501(c)3 non-profit founded 13 years ago, serving a diverse population of 400 students in grades prekindergarten through 9 (PreK-9). The school's purpose is to link all areas of human knowledge.
In 2014, HDMS purchased a building in need of complete renovation. The school's goal is to use the renovation as a foundation for implementing sustainability and environmental science education in a project-based, real-world setting. Students will engage in the process of LEED certifying the building; planning, designing and constructing new outdoor farming and learning spaces; and updating two other school buildings. As the project grows, the students and staff will use the space and the project as a model to provide education and professional development to other schools, educators, and community partners.
Right now, the project is focused on getting funding for a plot (pictured above) to create an urban farm. The plot was going to be used for high density low income housing. It was recently rezoned to be used for what we would like to do.
We need these funds in the next 2 months. Its a real time crunch, and we realize this, but the pay off will be amazing in the end. Not only will we be able to create a healthy organic local supply for our lunch program, we will create a CSA, as well as a curriculum based around economics, healthy living, and farming. There are SO many things this $200,000 will do for our charter school.
