Helping the Deaf Experience Sound

Donation protected
Hi,

My name is Samantha. I am a social worker and music producer.  I've just moved to LA from Washington D.C, with a dream of bringing music and sound to the hard of hearing and deaf communities. My mother lost her hearing in a very sudden and unexplained medical incident, so I am very close to this cause.

I've witnessed on both personal and professional levels the indisputable impact music has....Music is a huge part of my life, and I cannot imagine a life without it.  I truly believe that the right song, lyrics or beat can transcend all barriers - even genetic or physical limitations. With that being said, I aspire to translate sound to those who cannot otherwise hear it....Instead, the purpose of the idea is to have the individuals "feel it."

Just after I moved to LA, I was shown this video for a startup nonprofit. I was so inspired and moved by the video, I reached out to the nonprofit's developer, and offered to help. I was sublimely happy to see that someone shared my same passion, and was already moving forward to make a difference.

A few e-mails and an interview later, I am lucky enough to say I now work at this nonprofit.  Its mission is to recreate the music experience by using the senses, namely through tactile and visual means.  To better articulate what we do, please watch this short one-minute clip from our pilot program, which was filmed at a deaf elementary school in San Diego: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvxAhmV-EHU

We have only facilitated one deaf accessible concert, and we would like to host another around Christmas 2015. The funds we receive will enable us to keep bringing our program to schools and agencies that assist the hard of hearing at no cost. This resource should be available for free to anyone who could potentially benefit from it. No one should be denied what could be a very moving, powerful and maybe even life altering experience.

Your funds will specifically go toward:
1) maintaining a website and e-mail addresses for our few volunteers
2) purchasing our own vibro-tactile equipment (Subpacs, Emoti-Chairs, etc). Right now, we only have a few pieces "on loan" because they are so costly. This is by far our biggest expense, and the most important! These vibro-tactile pieces of equipment enable the children to physically feel the music through vibratory patterns.
3) printing business cards so that we can distribute our information at outreach events
4) purchasing our own projector and screen for presentations. We often times have to use the schools, if available

When you witness the reaction of someone who is experiencing sound for the first time....It changes your life.

This is a beautiful cause, and your help with this movement is greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this page.

Peace <3
