I’m trying to help my best friend/sister, Christy Buchanan and her husband raise funds for their daughter’s tough journey ahead!! Kira has been diagnosed with Ana-plastic large cell lymphoma located only in the meninges... which is the first case like this they have ever seen..?? The medical bills are extensive as they have needed to figure out what was happening. She has gone through SO many scary procedures such as blood tests, CT scans, multiple spinal taps, MRIs and MRAs as well as surgery on the spot on her brain... we finally found out what was causing the seizures after weeks of worry and an emotional roller coasters... Cancer...!! After weeks in the hospital trying to figure this out we now actually have been at the hospital for 2-3 weeks as she has been doing chemo since Monday the 16th and they need to watch her. Her white blood count has gone so low this week that she is at zero immunity and can not leave out of the unit. ...and no visitors... Her body is actually handling it pretty well and the doctors are pleased with her labs. After seeing how this first test period goes they will let us know what the rest of her treatment will look like. NO kid should EVER have to go through this!! It is heartbreaking!!! We truly appreciate everyone for your thoughts and prayers, also for reaching out to be of service to either bring us meals and gifts and we apologize for not being able to accept much as we are on strict rules from the doctors!! I feel in my heart that they are working to lift her spirits and keep her motivated to get home soon and healthy!!!+ Read More
Update from Christy: Hello everyone and thank you for your continued support and seeking to find out how Kira is doing, we really appreciate it so much!! We feel all the love and we know are on the right path. We did our 4th treatment 2 days after Christmas and discharged New Years Eve. It was a higher dose so it is getting tougher on her every time. She is handling it like a champ! We were home while her counts dropped again to zero and held off any fevers. She has had to have red cell transfusions as well as platelet transfusions many times. She is feeling pretty good though and when her counts start to recover she is excited to see her friends and get out and do the things she loves. That is also why it is so tough because she is such a busy outdoorsy sporty kind of girl so sitting around the house is not her gig and is driving her crazy. She has been able to get a few bike rides in, get to the rock climbing gym and got out to do a few paddles in the lake and river... she is so full of spirit when she returns and can feel that she is right around the corner of being able to do that all the time again. For now... we are back in the hospital for treatment number 5. We have been told that it looks like we might have one more treatment after this and then switch gears... Kira is so excited to know that this type of treatment is almost done and knows she is on the road to recovery. She is looking good and feeling better and is looking forward to getting back to where she was before. We have a few more days here in the hospital and then head home for a week of low counts, so with the cold and flu season so bad, we are on lock down so no one get sick, so she is not at risk. It is a super scary time. If she gets to 100.4 we are heading to the ER for at least 48 hour stay and antibiotics. We are all looking forward to the time we are not on edge so much!! Please know that I would love to be able to touch base personally to everyone to say thank you, but life is a little crazy... PLEASE know I appreciate and love all of you ( I don't even know some but you ) but you all have show love and support so much!! Thank you!!
Kira’s surgery on Monday went smooth and she rested for the rest of the day. She felt good waking up so they started her third round of Chemo. Doctors said the first round took it down about 60% and the second round took it down 25% of that so we are all hoping this will be the ticket to kill it 100%. They upped the dose so it is hitting her a bit harder and she is feeling not so good but still trying her best to be in good spirits and continue to eat good and exercise to help her body fight. When you don’t have an appetite and are tired that is not so fun to do, so I am extremely proud of her!! Thank you EVERYONE for your continued support and love... she is using every bit for fuel to blast us out of this hospital for good! (Even though Doernbechers is AMAZING!!!).... we want to be home!!
Well... it's been a tough couple weeks... Kira had a spinal tap almost 2 weeks ago and it has rocked her world!! She handled brain surgery and first round of treatment like a champ, but this last spinal tap really did a number on her... she has felt like her back was going to break in half and a 10 out of 10 headache... crazy how much the change of the spinal fluid can effect someone. She started her second does of chemo on the 11th which had us at the hospital for about 5 days and since she handled the first round they felt comfortable letting her rest at home for a few before all her counts drop really low. We head back in for about 3 days starting tomorrow (Monday) if her counts are low enough to stay... they need to give her antibiotics and watch her closely during this time. It has been a lot of bed rest, medications and constant attention lately but we are pulling through... seriously dreaming of a normal day and jealous of the time we had before all this worry and wishing it was all over!! Soon enough we will have her back and start to have normal schedule and we can look back on these crazy days.... all of the love and support has been overwhelming and we truly love and appreciate everyone!!!
Kira has been in the hospital since the 11th on the second round of chemo. Since it showed signs of reaction the doctors wanted to do it again. She will not have to be in the hospital for the whole time, which is good and she can rest at home, but she will still be on zero immunity so she will have to be on lock down at the house. It has really been crazy going from her being so active and top of her game with sports and fitness to not being able to really go outside....She has been trying to keep the walking going, but she just wants to walk outside and smell the fresh air. She has been handling this second round fairly well, but since her Spinal tap last week she has been in a lot more pain. We hope those symptoms subside soon so she can just focus on getting through this next tough treatment. The Buchanan's love and apperciate each and everyone of you that have reached out or shown support and they can not wait to be able to see you and give thanks in person!!
