A Gift Of Sight

Donation protected
Hi all,

I recently started retraining in martial arts, Choi Kwang Do (CKD). Mr Pickett (CKD Adapt founder & Instructor) and I had a conversation about one of his student’s, Maria Hollis who is completely blind and subsequently a few of us from CKD have signed up to run the Spartan Race on April 07th 2018 to raise funds in hope to give Maria the Gift of Sight. Would you be willing to support and sponsor me for this great cause and show our collective support for Maria!

A bit about Maria:
Maria is a purple belt in CKD (a major achievement in itself); she is now close to gaining her black belt. She loves going to class at least once a week, getting out of her flat and being able to socialise with her fellow martial arts students of which I am one. Maria loves books and listens to audio books but with an OrCam she would be able to read letters, newspapers and even her daughters school reports and assist with matters at home which is becoming more of struggle for her and her daughter.

Aim:
We would like to make Maria's life a little easier by helping her to purchase special Orcam glasses. Maria is certainly one of the most amazing people I have met. Despite her being completely blind (she has glaucoma iritis uveitis) Maria gets on with life the best she can but we want to make her life that little bit more easier and manageable. My campaign to raise funds to purchase OrCam glasses for Maria cost approximately £3,000.00

Orcam:
If you haven yet heard of the OrCam here is the link to see how fantastic and vital this equipment is for her.

In mid-August, Maria had a demonstration of the OrCam and was very impressed. Here are a few examples of what she can do with these glasses:

If Maria needs an plumber, electrician or anyone who has been booked to come and help her at home, she can scan their ID (with the glasses on) just by looking at an ID card to make sure they are who they say they are.
When doing the washing at home, she can for the first time see and know what colours each item are to separate them so no more pinks during her white washes!
By pointing at food items in her fridge cupboard and even cleaning products she will know exactly what she is picking up.

Funding:
We take so much in life for granted like being able to read menus in restaurants and cafes, recognising faces etc. For me giving someone the Gift of Sight is a precious thing and hopefully hard training will see me through the Spartan Run and in turn you will support me in raising funds to purchase Orcam glasses for Maria. If you're free on the 07th April come on down on support the CKD team and remember the smallest amount will help towards giving Maria sight and hopefully help her achieve her Black Belt too.
