Alexis & Charles House Fire

On the morning of January 6th my daughter, Alexis Lauren Leggett, and her boyfriend, Charles Johnson, lost literally everything they own in a house fire. Alexis and Charles had been living in an apartment in the Burton house in Urbanna for the past four years. The entire house was burned to the ground. Alexis is an animal lover and rather than try to to save any of her posessions she tried to save some of the owner's animals but only one dog survived. Unfortunately, the owner was injured in the fire and fundraisers have been set up to help she and her husband get back on their feet again.

Alexis and Charles are young and were both working hard to build a life together and are now faced with starting over with nothing. Charles's truck was destroyed in the fire and Alexis's had saved her money to buy a used car a few months ago and it was damaged in the fire but thankfully still runs.

I am so very thankful God was watching over Alexis and Charles and they were not hurt.  Material things can be replaced. Alexis and Charles both work in restaurants and trying to replace everything will take a very long time. Any donations to help them rebuild their lives would be so very much appreciated.

I apologize for the delay in updating everyone on what has been going on but I had surgery last week and fell behind. On my first post I said how lucky Alexis was that her car was not burned up as the other cars were during the fire. Unfortunately, appearances are deceiving. Initially we thought the car only suffered a melted tail light and blistered paint. As soon as she started driving the car again it was apparent it suffered a multitude of damages. To name a few, the braking system was not working, the car was overheating, the airbag system melted as did numerous seals, plastic and rubber parts on the car. The insurance adjuster cam out today to assess the damages and decided her car was a total loss.

Charles has returned to work and they think they may have a place to stay temporarily that has been offered by a wonderful couple. Alexis is still somewhat overwhelmed and says this situation has changed her forever. She is in awe of the generosity and compassion she has received from friends, family and complete strangers. In a world that seems so full of conflict and hate, without a doubt, the silver lining in this tragedy is experiencing the love and compassion of so many - that is priceless. Words cannot express our gratitude to everyone who has helped.

I just got home from spending the day in Urbanna with Alexis and Charles. Fires continued to flare up from the wind. When I left the fired department was there spraying everything down again and bulldozing the "hot" spots.
For those of you have helped them I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
