In October 2012 I got a call that my nephew Wilson was in the ER. His little six year old face and body was swollen, and it was clear his kidneys weren't working. He was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, a disorder that results from damage in the kidneys' filtering system. It has no known cure.
Fast forward five years later, and Wilson is doing okay. He takes daily doses of immuno-suppressant medication to keep the disease in check. But it's nasty stuff - the drugs significantly increase his risk of contracting leukemia, and if taken for too long, will destroy his immune system. Forever.
A common cold can cause a relapse, and something worse, like the flu, would be hard for him to kick, because the drugs supress his immuno response.
The family avoids germs like it's nobody's business. Missing school, birthday parties, Christmas and holidays with family is par for the course, if any attendee has even a whiff of a runny nose.
We ARE lucky though. For now, despite the scary drugs, Wilson's illness is under control. For many the disease means kidney transplants, lengthy and repeated hospital stays, and yes, in some cases, death.
Please help us find lasting treatments and cures for this disease; even little contributions can go a long way.
