Oral Health, Whole Health

‘Oral Health, Whole Health’
Achieving impeccable oral hygiene by very specific cleaning advice, our ‘Oral Health, Whole Health’ programme will greatly reduce tooth decay and gum disease, and many subsequent conditions. This will give a significantly improved quality of life for all, but especially for those with limited access to oral and general healthcare.

Background.
Travelling around the world marketing other inventions, Stuart Saunders was disappointed with the design of regular dental floss dispensers. They were bulky, uncomfortable in the pocket, and sometimes broke.

He made a note to design a ‘comfortable’ dental floss, particularly for travellers. He sat down with a ruler and a calculator, & ‘the competition’, & tried to figure out what form a ‘comfortable’ floss might take. Eventually, he decided that a credit card shape, with a thickness of about 1/6th of an inch (4mm) thick would be able to hold at least 50 M of floss, the industry standard. Designing on those parameters, he eventually came up with what is now called ‘FlossFirst’ Credit Card Dental Floss.

FlossFirst got a large order on its first showing, and has since won Silver or Gold Medals for ‘Best New Health Product’ at every Invention Exhibition entered.

Once manufacturing was under way, Stuart began studying the mouth & teeth. He developed a strong respect for oral hygiene, and a good understanding of the processes involved. This resulted in the name ‘FlossFirst’; i.e. when cleaning, ‘Floss First, then brush’; this gives the best cleaning, and  best mouth feel.

Around this time, a young lady came to his apartment; she was very distressed, complaining that she had no friends, & could not get a boyfriend. She doodled on a newspaper as she talked, drawings of a very unhappy girl, with lots of tears; she talked of suicide.

Stuart listened for a while, then said ‘Sit down, I’ve got some thing to tell you.” She sat.

“You have extremely bad breath” he said. “Your breath is so bad, I would not like to get in the same car as you”

“I can tell you this, because I can fix it” He then gave her some dental floss, and showed her how to use it. After that, he gave her a toothbrush & toothpaste, & showed her how to use them. After she had done this, most of the halitosis was gone.

Stuart then said “Ok, now go to the dentist and have them clean your teeth professionally, and fix any cavities”. He did not see her for around two years after that; but she later came to work for him as a personal assistant, & had no halitosis then.

Encouraged by this unanticipated success, Stuart has since offered a money back guarantee on oral halitosis with FlossFirst; he has continued to research oral hygiene, also amassing an interesting dental floss museum. He has at times experimented on himself, establishing that tooth decay can begin in as little as 1 hour, under ideal conditions for it; i.e., under very ‘unideal’ conditions for teeth.

Stuart was very concerned seeing baby bottle tooth decay in toddlers, & this got him thinking; what were the forces at play to cause such destruction? He thought about this, eventually coming up with ‘Oral Hygiene, the New Flossophy’. Stuart has taught this novel Oral Hygiene approach in various schools in Taiwan and Thailand, from the underprivileged children of NorthEast Thailand (Isaan), as well as those of the Kanchanaburi (Burma Railway) area, and also at the Kings School, adjacent the Kings Palace in Hua Hin. Stuart donates floss to these students, then teaches the why, when and how of Oral Hygiene; finishing by advising that ‘With good care, (follow these instructions!), your teeth can last for 500 years’

He has amassed a lot of information on the effects of poor oral hygiene & gum disease on the whole body. Heart attacks are known to double, and strokes are up 150%, with gum disease; many cancers show significant increases correlated to gum disease. Pancreatic cancer doubles (R.I.P., Steve Jobs), and women who have lost teeth due to gum disease have been found to have an 11 fold increase in the incidence of breast cancer. Yes, 11 times.

Where good oral hygiene is critical, is for remote populations; indigenous and rural, those without ready access to fully equipped dentists. So for them, practicing  good oral hygiene is of utmost importance, as tooth decay can be fatal. Examples of these populations are; rural Australian aborigines, displaced refugees from Myanmars ethnic conflicts, the indigenous of North and South America, and rural Bhutanese, and many others.

We will start with a controlled study, then use the results to refine the teachings. Then, we will extend the programme, as far as funds allow; also, we will make the case to governments to provide free preventative care consumables (floss, paste and brush), along with biannual or annual checkups at their nearest dentist.

Flossing has been in the news recently, with one report (from a media organisation!) claiming that as a result of what they know to be poorly controlled studies, that there is no benefit to flossing. However, whenever this report has been mentioned in the media, the great majority of commenters strongly support flossing, most commenters being dentists!

One of the aims of our study will be to qualify and quantify the benefits (or otherwise) of flossing, & to publish them. We will set up a website with the results, including oral camera video inspections of teeth, cleaned by various methods, or not. Other test methods, not known to have been used before, will be documented with results.

So the net benefit of this study will be better quality of life, also longer life for all, but particularly for the many rural and indigenous; those with limited, to very limited access to oral and other healthcare. In Australia there is a programme called ‘Closing the Gap’ to try to bring the health of indigenous closer to that of ‘urbs’ - we believe our programme will go a long way toward achieving that.
