Hackathon for Transgender Empowerment

Kortney Ryan Ziegler   OAKLAND, CA
Research shows that transgender people are unemployed at 2x the national rate"“4x for transgender people of color; have incomes of less than $10,00 a year; experience homelessness at 2x the rate of non-trans people; and suffer overwhelming discrimination when it comes to accessing adequate healthcare and legal services. This problem not only affects transgender adults but trans and gender nonconforming youth as well. A necessary step in addressing anti-transgender bias is to create technology that socially empowers transgender individuals. Imagine if there existed a mobile phone app that helps individuals find trans friendly doctors or an app that profiles safe space job opportunities for trans people across the country? Trans*H4CK is a space in which to turn these possibilities into reality.

Over the course of 48-hours, developers, designers, activists, community members, youth and entrepreneurs invested in the betterment of the lives of trans and gender nonconforming people, will share ideas and create apps, websites and products that provide solutions in challenging anti-transgender discrimination.

Money raised will be used for space rental, travel sponsorships for out of town participants, payment for guest speakers and prizes.

Sending our donation to support an amazing academic, mediamaker, social entrepreneur and humanitarian- Dr. Kortney Ryan Ziegler. Too often in our circles we do not thank the community managers, artists, writers and "those who walk the walk" until they are gone. Thank you for doing the work that you do to help QTPOC of color communities. Thank you for using your gifts to aide others. Most importantly, thank you for having the encourage to continue to be you at all costs, even in the face of struggle and adversity. In addition, we make the donation in the name of Islan Nettles- slain transgender woman from Harlem who was murdered on August 22, 2013. As Harlemites for life, our hearts were beyond saddened to hear of the injustice. But yet our minds are still blown by the hatred and disrespect for one of our own. This past month we had the honor of helping to produce/volunteer BUTCH Voices and the Activists Mobilizing for Power Conferences. After closing these events, we remember feeling a sense of rejuvenation and solidarity with others. If we learned nothing else from these conferences, it was the lesson that queer community and people of color must become their own fundraisers and take pride in funding "the change we want to see". Standing in solidarity with you Kortney and we know TRANS*H4CK will be a success. - Kawana S. Bullock & Salena M. Clayton
