Gen: a mother’s fight for her son

Gen is a loving, caring mother to her 4 year old son who has autism and other medical conditions. She has always put his care first. Her family, friends, and health care professionals, who have come into contact with her through her efforts to ensure her son’s special needs are met, agree that she is an exceptional parent. Gen had sole custodial decision making with regard to her son, his father initially denying paternity until it was proven, a consequence of Toronto Social Services intervention. The father rejected Gen’s offer of him seeing his son every week, instead preferring every other week.
Gen now finds herself in need of legal counsel to retain her relationship with her son who she has cared for, without the father, for 4 years. The father, in what seems like an attempt to punish Gen, is petitioning for sole custody and has engaged legal counsel to make this happen. Gen is very concerned that her son’s father will attempt to eliminate her from his life altogether. Circumstances are unfolding that give her no voice – Gen is effectively handcuffed to advocate for her son.
An injustice is unfolding rapidly that will affect the care and well being of a 4 year old boy.
Different professionals have made depositions that Gen is a capable and loving mother who is acutely aware of her son’s special needs and had put in place services to support him. These services are no longer in place. Her son has been taken from her in a protracted legal case where the father has refused to mediate and prefers to litigate. Legal maneuverings by the father have effectively reduced Gen’s contact with her son to 4 hours per month and the father is seeking to make this permanent - despite any evidence against Gen and mounting concerns about the behavior of the father by several medical professionals.
Funds are urgently needed… $50,000 … to retain a lawyer to represent Gen. Legal proceedings to date have forced Gen into bankruptcy and she has no funds to cover legal costs. Gen needs expert legal counsel to turn this case around and be able to continue caring for her son and his special needs.
