Follaine Current Service Demands
The Follaine Youth Counselling Service provides a confidential counselling service for young people from 10-18 years of age to help and support them with challenges in their lives. The main presenting issues include anxiety, depression, bereavement, emotional and behavioural difficulties, school and family difficulties and self harm. Follaine is funded to provide counselling for 100 young people a year.
In 2015 Follaine worked with 113 young people (m=46 & f=67). In 2016 from January to June the number of clients referred to the Service was 83 (Male =39 & Female =44). This is a 27% increase in referrals on the same period last year. Currently we now only have the capacity to accommodate 17 young people. Historically September has been our busiest month. We have attributed the increase demand on our services to the rise in anxiety and depression among young people topped with the lack of appropriate mental health support for young people.
CRYS needs extra funding so that more young people can access our counselling supports – It costs €400 for 10 sessions of counselling for one young person.
