Travel to Haiti

On the fourth of October, Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Haiti. As a result of the category 4 hurricane, an estimated 900 people were killed.

Unfortunately, that number is likely much higher, and growing with every passing day.

The southern peninsula has effectively been severed from the capital. Bridges were swept away by rising rivers, and rain and mudslides have destroyed the one highway that leads from the capital to the rural communities. This has resulted in delayed arrival of aid and supplies, and an inability to properly asses the scope of the damage.

What we do know is that the damage has been catastrophic. Aerial reconnaissance has determined that around 90% of homes have been destroyed in southern Haiti. Wind has uprooted crops, rain has eroded farmland, and the storm surge has salinated the soil, preventing future crop growth. Clean water is non-existant. As a result, people have taken to drinking tainted water, and now the number of Cholera cases is rapidly growing.

We've received particularly chilling details from the community of Les Anglais, which was ground zero for Matthew's category 4 landfall in Haiti. Of the over 4000 homes in Les Anglais, 82 are still standing. In this one community alone, there are 179 reported deaths and over 700 injuries. The hospital has run out of supplies, but the amount of patients still grows as victims of Cholera, falling debris, infection, etc. funnel in.

Les Anglais is also the hometown of my mother, and the current residence of my Grandmother.

I am seeking funds to travel from Lincoln, Nebraska to Port-au-Prince, Haiti and then to the regions devastated by the storm. Because transportation post-arrival will largely be improvised, the amount I am asking for is an estimation of travel costs, and as many supplies (water purification tablets, medical supplies, food, etc.) we will be able to carry on our backs. We understand the scope of the situation that lies before us, and we know that we will not be able to fix every problem we encounter. However, we cannot stand by as more lives are lost with every passing day.

It always hurts to see disaster strike a country that has always meant so much to me and my family. However, I always find solace in seeing that there are other people that care about Haiti as much as I do.

Thank you for you donations.
