On October 2nd through October 4th, 2016, Haiti endured arguably the worst natural disaster since the 2010 earthquake. Hurricane Matthew, a powerful category 4 storm, devastated the south-western region of the country. Among the hardest hit areas are Port Salut, Les Cayes, and Jeremy. Close to 900 people are reported dead, to date. Unfortunately, the tragedy does not end there.
WHY YOU SHOULD DONATE:
It has been reported that nearly ninety percent (90%) of the buildings in Port Salut, including homes, schools and hotels, have been completely destroyed. Thousands of families, including children, are now literally sleeping out on the streets – exposed to the elements. I have personally met many of them through my frequent travels to Port Salut -- people like Adeline, a mother of four; Rochlene, a young mother of two; Paul Dely, a father of four, just to name a few. Their homes and belongings were completely destroyed by the storm. These heart breaking stories are repeated thousands of times in Port Salut.
ABOUT ME AND HOW THE FUNDS WILL BE USED
My name is Jacques Georges. I was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Those of you who know me well have heard my stories about my love for Port Salut, its natural beauty and the kind, welcoming people who call this once vibrant, coastal town home.
My goal is to raise enough funds to help re-build 5 homes in Port Salut. I have secured the commitment of an architect and engineer who will donate his services towards this endeavor. My goal is to help 5 families with children get off the streets. These homes are modest and do not cost much to build.
