Hispañola Health Partners is a non-profit that has been helping locals improve health care in SE Haiti since 2013. We are now raising money for families in Haiti who are suffering after Hurricane Matthew.
We are putting this fund together to help bring food, doctors, water, blankets and medications to families in the town and surrounding areas of Majofre, where our medical clinic is located. Majofre is located off the south coast where the storm hit hardest. Hispañola Health Partners has been active in the area for 3 years, supporting the community with medical care, personnel training and related health services.
It will take days to get a full assessment of how badly this storm really affected Haiti, but right now government officials have declared over 800 deaths and 350,000 people in need of aid. Both or these numbers are sadly expected to climb.
Haiti is the poorest country in the western hemisphere and with their living conditions, this is truly a horrific situation. We expect landslides due to the deforestation and the spread of diseases, the main disease to worry about is cholera. Cholera has claimed over 10,000 lives over the past 5 years and is spread through water.
