Kelsey's Shear Love Volunteer Trip

While I love eating and drinking in fabulous cosmopolitan cities for work, weddings and just-because, I have been wanting a different type vacation for some time: Different culture, different pace and to connect with folks in a different walk of life.

As some of you know, I volunteered in high school (admittedly a long time ago) and LOVED my time in rural Mexico. I loved working with the children in the tiny orphanages and helping build shelters for their living and learning quarters. Though I volunteer in Houston, I have not felt fulfilled the way I did when I was emerged in the culture. I looked for a similar program; a program where (although I’m not a high school kid) I can volunteer for community service in another culture but could also use the skills I have developed. I found Shear Love International, an initiative of Thrive Rescue.

Starting in March 2017, I will spend 6 weeks in Thailand. I will learn more about what I get to do specifically in the coming weeks, but have committed to be part of the Education Team with Shear Love International and to give the gift of my time, energy, ideas, and moral and physical support to the women in this community. I’ll be helping provide education for women who have been victims of human trafficking and will teach them necessary skills to work in a salon.

They say I’ll change the lives of others for the better. At the very least, I expect to get to live somewhat like a local, not a tourist, with language and cultural immersion. Sounds cool? Great! If you think it really sounds cool, please contribute to my new adventure!
