The Latina Center is a nonprofit organization based in Richmond, California. Our aim is to improve the Psychological, Physical and Spiritual health of the Latina women that have been the victim of Domestic Violence. A majority of the women that come into our office have experienced horrible treatment at the hands of their partners for many years, sometimes decades. Our support group and counseling group provides these women with a safe space for them to share their traumatic experiences.
The Latina Center is a leader in developing interventions for domestic violence that are culturally and linguistically specific to Latina women and their children. We have served approximately 500 women victims of domestic violence in the past two years. We follow up their recovery and transformation until they complete the program. Unfortunately, and due to limited funding, we are in danger of losing our Domestic Violence Support Group and Counseling Group.
The support group is a six month program where these women are free to express their feelings without fears and concerns of being criticized. The support group also provides the participant with a safety plan and referral with other services if necessary. The facilitator and supporting staff are all graduates of The Latina Center’s leadership and empowerment programs. This creates a calm and empathetic atmosphere between the facilitator and the participants.
