The Lump With No Answers

It started when a routine visit to the doctor led to the discovery of a large nodule in my thyroid. Three ultrasounds, two biopsies, one genetic test and many doctor visits later, I still had nothing more than, "it might be cancer, it might not be". Then finally, after another referral to another specialist, I was able to get some answers.

Here is what I know. The biopsies keep coming back inconclusive because I have Hurthle cells. These types are very rare, and just simply because of the type of cell they are, no doctor can tell if they are cancerous or not based on a small biopsy. Genetic tests also can not detect it. In addition, the ultrasounds show many characteristics of cancer: microcalcifications, lots of blood flow, and it is a large, solid mass. If it is cancer, it is more aggressive than other types of thyroid cancers, and if it spreads, it doesn't respond as well to the typical treatments. So now, surgery is the only next step.

I might have cancer, I might not, and it is terrifying. On top of all of this, we've had many medical bills piling up, and many other bills go unpaid because of it. Every time I have had to go to the doctor, the visit alone costs at least $300, and now the surgery is going to cost $2500. And they all want everything up front. In addition, my insurance will not cover the genetic test, and I now have to pay $4000 for that. And if this is cancer, this is only the beginning.
