The Angélica Choc Fund

The home of Angélica Choc, an Indigenous Q’eqchi’ Maya activist, was shot at by unknown assailants in the early hours of September 17th, 2016 while she was asleep inside with two of her children in her home in El Estor, Guatemala. (For details see: http://nisgua.org/international-solidarity- with-women- defenders-and-all- defending-water- land-life- and-territory/ ).

This incident was days before her appearance in court for the murder of her husband Adolfo Ich on September 27th, 2009 by private security from Canadian-owned HudBay Minerals at the Fénix mine in El Estor. In addition to the case in Guatemalan courts, Choc has initiated a precedent-setting law suit in Canadian courts against HudBay Minerals and its Guatemalan subsidiary the Guatemalan Nickel Company (Compañía Guatemalteca de Níquel, or CGN in Spanish) over her husband’s murder.

Last week’s intimidating attack was likely linked to Angelica’s work in Guatemala and Canada, for justice for her husband’s murder and in defense of human rights for Q’eqchi’ communities.

Please donate to ensure the safety of Angélica and to help her with her legal expenses.

Thank you.

I know Angélica Choc through having the pleasure to meet her while she was in Vancouver doing a tour. I intend on delivering the funds to her by sending it to her.
