This GoFundMe campaign is dedicated to raising funds for the 2017 USA Golden Shears Representatives.
The American Sheep Shearers Council has partnered with Heiniger USA to raise funds to assist the team as they travel to Ivercargill New Zealand to compete.
The Golden Shears World Championships are held every two years and involve competing at multiple local American competitions to qualify for one of the 6 team openings.
This years team is made up of the following individuals, proudly representing 5 states and utilizing talent from multiple regions.
Machine Shearing
Alex Moser- Lester, Iowa
Loren Opstedahl- Piedmont, South Dakota
Blade Shearing
Kevin Ford- Charlemont, Massachusetts
Loren Opstedahl- Piedmont, South Dakota
Wool Handling
Leanne Brimmer- Biddle, Montanna
Maggie Passino- Charlottesville, Virginia
For as long as I have been involved in the American Shearers Council and having represented the USA on two separate occasions, it has always fallen on the individuals participating to entirely fund this trip on their own. The host country provides accommodation for the participants for the duration of the competition but all other expenses are the sole responsibility of the team member. This includes flights, accommodation for any days you arrive early or stay after the actual competition, all meals, and all transportation in country. The cost of competing in New Zealand is especially hefty considering the following expenses based off of the last time we competed their in2012 which includes;
Round Trip Flight- between $1,400-$2,000
Hotels rooms for the week leading up to the contest- potentially costing upwards of $1000
Car rental for 2 weeks- starting at $700
This doesn't even include meals and misc expenses.
This trip is very expensive for each member of the team involved. But our team has shouldered the cost every time for the love of sheep and shearing. Our guys and gals are proud to represent our country in an international setting and are happy to make the necessary sacrifices to be apart of history every time.
Thankfully Heiniger USA has teamed up with us to help us raise funds to offset the expenses for our team. For every $20 donation made to the campaign we will submit your name into a drawing for a Heiniger XPERT Shearing Machine.
