My name is Harry Shields and I have lived in Pinellas County Florida for 32 years. I am a member of The Refuge Church in Clearwater, Florida. Our church's mission is to help the homeless and the less fortunate. Not long ago, I was asked to volunteer my time, to help one of our church members Larry "Tiger" Clark. I have been working with Tiger for about five weeks as he has needed help getting to and from his rehab appointments.
If there has ever been a situation where someone needs help, this is that situation. To give you a little back ground on Tiger, he is a lifelong resident of Central Florida. He was burned, severely over 80% of his body as a young child, which has left him with massive scarring! These burns were serious enough for Social Security to deem him disabled. At the present time Tiger does receive $727.00 per month, but this does not even cover the cost of his room.
Several months ago, after an operation on his knee, Tiger contracted MRSA in the hospital, and had to have his leg removed above the knee, on his left side. He has finally received his artifical leg, and I can report that he is doing well with his rehab. Unfortunately, his insurance has run out and he can no longer receive his, very much needed, rehab.
Not having a permanent residence, has forced him to pay high weekly rates for just a roof over his head, and this rate is much more than his disabilty payments.
Tiger is in much need of the funds that can be raised from this effort immediately.
I have personally seen how hard Mr. Clark is trying. What he has been through in his life would kill most of us, but yet he keeps on pushing and trying his best. There are no words that I could state here on how much these funds could help this man on his immediate and long range recovery. He, like most of us, is a proud man and does not like handouts. He has a hard time accepting all forms of help. But this need is so great, that he really doesn't have any more options.
