Sooke Shelter has a goal to raise $1 Million to contribute to building affordable and supported rental housing for the Community of Sooke.
Sooke Shelter’s fundraising campaign is to ensure everyone has access to safe, decent, affordable housing in Sooke, BC.
Sooke Shelter supports making communities safer, healthier and happier.
Sooke, BC has a population of over 13,000. The area’s growth rate is above the national growth rate of 5.0 per cent. While growth is good we need to ensure sustainability by addressing the need of affordable housing for the community of Sooke, BC.
The data from the 2018, March Hunger Count at the Sooke Food Bank found 685 people rely on the food bank. It further showed that just over ½ of those using the food bank are adults, 17% are seniors and sadly the remaining 31% of those who rely on the food bank are under 19. The number of people they feed, particularly children, is increasing every month in large part due to the high cost of housing.
In Sooke, BC, there are 38 people who are visibly homeless, and it is estimated that there are 100 or more people among the “hidden homeless.” The cost of rental units in Sooke continues to increase radically. There are numerous families and individuals at imminent risk of homelessness. Meanwhile, there is no affordable housing strategy. The lack of affordable housing is not only affecting those already experiencing homelessness but also increasing by those higher up in income scale. Unaffordable housing drives struggling families deeper into poverty.
Healthy communities require all elements working together. Research has found that equipping families with an affordable home frees up resources for healthy food and consistent health care. Being in a stable home also improves children’s educational outcomes, which contributes to children more likely to go to college that provides them to earn more as adults and lower incarceration rates.
The work to expand affordable housing cannot be done by housing advocates alone. As part of our community housing strategy we need a rights-based national housing strategy that is also adequately funded and is developed in consultation with all levels of government to ensure that everyone has the right to secure, adequate and affordable housing. Sooke Shelter is calling on all levels of government to ensure that everyone has the right to secure, adequate and affordable housing.
