Symposium in Toronto

Donation protected
I have been offering Chair Dance classes to seniors for the past 4 years in Victoria.  As a Dance/Movement Educator I have brought this program to Victoria  to over 14 care homes, assisted living facilities, recreation centres and to the MS Society.

This November the first National Symposium on Dance and Well being is being held in Toronto.  I was invited to present an experiential workshop in Chair Dance.

I am raising money to go to Toronto, to create a 45 minute video to download to memory sticks.  These will be available for sale at the Symposium.  I am not being paid as a presenter and am responsible for the registration fee.  The funds are needed by the last week of October, 2016.

I am honoured to participate.  Chair Dance supports integration of body and mind.  Classes are a combination of creative dance, modern dance and yoga.

Research has shown that dance, more than any other form of exercise, delays the onset of aging and dementia.  Wellbeing is promoted when seniors have the opportunity to dance.

The benefits to participants taking a Chair Dance class are many:  increased confidence, greater flexibility and strenthening of muscles, reduced stress, improved cognitive functioning, overall increase in stamina.  Participants also expereince the joy of movement.  Chair dance is great for everyone as well as those witih mobility and balance challenges.

I have seen dramatic changes in the participants as their vitality increases.  I believe in the power of dance as a transformative tool and am excited about dance being recognized in research circles for its significance in aging.

I strongly beleive in collaboration and think this opportunity will expand my work further both in Victoria and nationally.  I am presently collaborating with dance therapists and researchers in the U.K., the United States and in Australia.

I would be very grateful for any financial assistance to attend and present at the Symposium. Upon my return I will continue to share what I learned.
