A chance for little ones in Kenya
Hey people,
I am Eliza Cannon and am soon to be completing my Primary education degree. I am also soon to be hopping on a plane to Kenya to teach children English at Aberdere Ranges Primary School in Nakuru. A school founded in response to internally displaced peoples after the violent election retaliation in 2007.
Myself and a bunch of fellow Notre Dame students will be working in conjunction with the not-for profit organisation, So They Can. A wonderful initiative that works reciprocally with communities in Africa, empowering people to become self-sufficient and meet their own needs through education and community and economic development.
The rights of children and gender equality are interconnected issues that lie at the core of So They Can's focus as well as my own entrenched personal passions.
So... My friends from Notre Dame and I, are raising some coin to help fund the program and initiatives involved with it this year. Children in Kenya must sit and pass a High School entry exam in complete English. If they do not pass this, they simply do not move forward with their education. In addition to this, the stigma associated with women's sexual health and menstruation is absolutely disastrous. With your help, we can develop teaching resources to take with us to refine these children's English skills and help them nail this exam. We will also develop Reusable Sanitary Kits and an educational curriculum surrounding menstruation that we can offer to young girls in the community.
