Hi, my name is Victoria Givens-McMillan and I am an 18 year military veteran. I have always been passionate about helping veterans. Whether it is giving them a ride to a doctor's appointment , helping them with benefits or a listening to thier concerns . Recently, a good friend of mine (who happens to be a Navy Veteran) had hip replacement surgery. So I decided to make him a Navy-themed blanket while he was recovering. I thought it would be something nice for him to have. I gave the blanket to his wife and did not think much of it until his wife started texting me. She told me he was really taken a back by my gift. He could not believe that I would take the time out to really do something special for him.
Fortunately, he is 76 years old and he has a lot of family support. I started to wonder how many veterans are lying in the hospital with very little family or friends to visit them. I thought if I could make some blankets and donate them to veteran, whether if they are in a hospital or nursing home. They would know that someone cares about them and that they are not alone. These blankets would be a reminder that the sacrifices that they made are appreciated and would make their day.
All the money that will be raised will go to making blankets. Each blanket cost about 36 dollars to make. All persons involved in the project are giving their time, love, and patience to make each blanket. I am hoping to have enough funds to start making the blankets by the end of April. All blankets will be donated to the Department of Veteran Affairs nursing homes in Paramus and Basking Ridge in New Jersey.
As a veteran ,I have been fortunate to have family and friends who have supported me in every step of my recovery. I feel very blessed. So giving back to others who are in need is very important to me. When I see a need that has not been met , I try and find ways to make that need a reality. I feel that this project will brighten the days and nights of veteran who do not have the family connections that I do.
I think at the end of each day if I can change the life of one person that makes me happy. Knowing that others care as much as I do about veterans' lives makes me forever grateful.
