Hands Across the Sea
My name is Caroline Adams and I am a High School Senior in Chicago. I lived on a sailboat with my family from 2008 until we completed our circumnavigation in 2012. Along the way, we met Harriett and Tom Linsky on the catamaran, "Hands Across the Sea". They had a different mission than most of the other cruisers. They were sailing on a mission to help build and stock school libraries on different islands throughout the Eastern Caribbean.
This non-profit organization appropriately named Hands Across the Sea, is dedicated to raising the literacy levels of the children in the Caribbean. To accomplish their goal, they receive wish lists from different schools for books and supplies that they need to support the children on the island. They collect money to buy the books that are on these wish lists and then send the books to the schools.
Since their start in 2007, they have collected and sent over 247,000 books and have completed 330 "projects" by creating or rebuilding libraries on these islands.
During our travels, we visited many different islands and were welcomed into their local schools. There, my brothers and I, would help teach the English classes and read to the kids. We noticed that the schools, usually a single room with kids of all ages, had limited supplies and needed a lot of books. They needed the support of an organization like Hands Across the Sea.
When I returned to Chicago, I knew I wanted to help support the ‘Hands’ organization. Over the last four years, I have held local book drives that received donations of hundreds of pounds of books that were sent to help stock Eastern Caribbean libraries.
This year, I am taking a different approach by raising money that could be used to support the specific needs of these schools.
If you choose to donate to this dedicated organization, you will be helping the children in over 300 schools and libraries in the Eastern Caribbean that Hands Across the Sea supports though building and stocking libraries.
Thank you very much for considering to support this great organization.
Thank you, Caroline for creating this Go Fund Me Page to raise money for Hands Across the Sea! We would be delighted to use these funds to send new library books to Wesley Primary School in Dominica. It's a small school on the northeast coast and a library was recently created by a Peace Corps Volunteer. The children at this school have few books at home so being able to borrow books from their school library is helping them to develop a love of reading. Thank you for rallying your friends to make a big impact in a small village in Dominica.
