My Name is Lisa Melendez, and I am a high school Business teacher and the proud sponsor of Business Professionals of America at Portage High School in Portage, Indiana. Business Professionals of America is the #1 co-curricular activity in the world.
For the past five years, I worked with some amazing high school students who compete with other students in our district for top student in business related topics such as computer programming, accounting, desktop publishing and the list continues with 90 other cataorgies.
Once one of my students makes the top five in their respective contest, they move on to state competition, which is held in Indianaoplis. The kids then compete again with other kids in the state. If the kids place in the top five in their respective contest for state, the kids then move on to nationals. Last year, nationals was in Boston, this year, nationals will be held in Orlando. FL.
Each year, I try to take to state and nationals as many students that qualify, but it's getting harder and harder to travel. This is where I need help, we do fundraise, but school fundraising is limited and on my teacher salary, I cannot afford to pay the whole bill myself, although I try.
The experience my kids gain from this competition stays with them forever. BPA teaches my kids the skills they need to go and succeed in the business world.
I would have many thankful students if we could get help with our Indy bill and our Orlando bill. The money would be put into our school account and our school bookkeeper would pay the invoice once we receive it. The money would never touch my hands. Also, my pocket book would thank-you.
