Nemacolin Castle (Bowman's Castle) located in Brownsville, Pennsylvania, 40 miles south of Pittsburgh is one of Pennsylvania's best kept secrets!
The twenty-two room Castle was built around the very first trading post West of the Allegheny Mountains dating back to 1789. Jacob Bowman, founder of the trading post and many of the first businesses in Brownsville, pa, including one of the first nail factories west of the Alleghenies, settled in SW PA in 1789. His wealth increased, his family grew, and thus, his house expanded. Three generations of the Bowman family lived in the Castle which sits proudly on a hill above the Monongahela River in Brownsville. In 1959, the last Bowman died and the house was purchased by Fayette county to be turned into a historic Museum.
Nemacolin Castle is on the National register of Historic Places.
Nemacolin Castle has three architectural sections built in 1789, 1810, and the 1850's. Inside are the original furnishings belonging to the Bowman family. Some rooms even have original carpeting and wall paper dating back to the nineteenth century! The house also includes a Well that was hand dug by Soldiers during the French and Indian War! A truly one-of-a-kind museum!
Unfortunately, in recent years, the mansion has lost much of it's romantic charm due to lack of funding. Keeping up with the maintenance has become too much for the small budget! The house is open for tours Every weekend from April through December, but our recent increase in visitors has not been enough to keep up with the maintenance of the house and unfortunately, it is showing on the outside and on the inside.
This house is a huge part of not only the History of Brownsville, but the history of Pennsylvania and the US.
