Classroom Screen Printing Studio

Donation protected
My name is Jacob Neal and I am a Digital Media Arts and Career Technical Education (CTE) teacher in Denver Public Schools (DPS). This Go Fund Me is a request for donations in order to plan, build and utilize a screen printing studio in my classroom in order to benefit the K-12 students and the surrounding community of the Creative Arts Academy, where I teach, in Southwest Denver.

As a Visual Arts teacher, I pride myself in communicating to my students the importance of critical & creative thinking in addition to the mastery of arts’ materials & skills. As a CTE teacher, it pleases me tremendously to be able to educate students about how they can be successful on multiple levels in creative, professional careers.

Our Creative Arts Academy offers students exposure to both visual arts and the performing arts. Course options include 2D & 3D visual art classes, music, dance and drama. Throughout the year we produce and perform a number of events including student lead art shows, elementary/secondary plays & musicals. Students are also responsible for converting part of our school into a haunted house for our Haunted Hallways event. In addition, spring begins with our students preparing and performing for the community in our Latin Dance Festival. The entire year is also stacked with monthly First Friday events where the community is invited to partake in different art themed events. We also maintain a community garden where students plant, water, harvest, and donate and sell produce to the surrounding community.

Screen-printing allows artists the ability to create multiples of a single design on variety of surfaces, most notably in the form of posters and t-shirts. This medium has historically been often used in advertising and merchandising. Having our own print studio would allow students the opportunity to design, print and supply advertising and merchandise for all of our schools events. Students would also be able to partake in economics lessons in learning how to budget for materials and aiming to make profits from merchandise sales in order to fund future projects.

Screen-printing, in a nutshell, consists of creating a design/artwork, 'burning' that image onto a screen using a light sensitive emulsion and an exposure unit (similarly to what you would expect in a photography darkroom). This image creates a stencil on the screen and ink is then pushed trough the screen thus creating a print. The screen can then be cleaned or reclaimed, the emulsion washed out and it can then be reused for another project.

In order to create an efficient print studio it is imperative to have all the proper tools and procedures in place. Donations for this Go Fund Me will be used to purchase building materials such as wood, hardware, a large piece of table top glass, caulk and plumbing materials that will be used to create a light sensitive cabinet to store screens, an exposure unit cabinet and a screen washout booth all of which will be hand built. Money will also be used to purchase tools such as a power washer, screens, squeegees, ink, emulsions and emulsion removers. Lastly, allocations will be used to purchase materials for printing such as paper and apparel.
