Greening the K-12 Curriculum

Greening the K-12 Curriculum

Youth empowerment and education are keys to a sustainable future – and the American Society for Environmental History (ASEH) would like to share its resources with secondary school teachers to augment and enrich environmental learning in North American classrooms. Our non-profit organization can provide teachers with access to scholars and researchers as well as a considerable volume of teaching materials, but we need your help to move forward.

This initiative begins with two special seminars for Chicago area educators March 2017, during the ASEH’s annual conference. Teachers will also participate in field trips led by ASEH members, providing them an opportunity to learn more about the environmental history of local sites – information they can take back to their classrooms. These activities will bring together scholars and teachers to explore new ways of teaching environmental history in secondary schools, showing how teachers can use local environments as texts and sources for understanding the past.

Additional initiatives are planned for 2018 in Riverside, California and for subsequent years. Environmental historians will visit schools to discuss their research and show students why the past matters so deeply and how it affects today’s environmental issues. Teaching materials will be posted on the ASEH website as a permanent and growing resource for all educators We will fund release time for teachers to attend workshops and seek professional development credits for those engaged in these activities.

We need modest, one-time funding to cover teachers’ release time and field trip expenses as we develop this effort.  Our goal is $7500.00 for the next two years to assist in defraying the costs of teachers’ participation in these activities.

Our youth have the power to make the world a better place with a brighter future. Thank you very much for considering a contribution.
