Help Prevent Disease & Save Lives in New Jersey: Keep Syringe Access Programs Open!
New Jersey only has five Syringe Access Programs statewide, located in Atlantic City, Camden, Jersey City, Newark and Paterson. These programs have been a resounding success for more than eight years! They help people protect themselves and others from HIV, hepatitis C and other blood-borne diseases. The programs provide people who use drugs with access to free sterile syringes and medical supplies, overdose prevention information and naloxone, basic medical care, HIV testing and counseling as well as referrals to drug treatment and other social services.
The Syringe Access Programs have been struggling for years on shoe-string budgets with no public funding to purchase syringes and other supplies. The little money they had for supplies is running out! One of the programs had to shut down syringe access services two months ago, turning clients in need away at their door. Another program will run out of supplies shortly. All of the programs and the people they serve are in desperate need of support!
The New Jersey Legislature recognized this need and the life-saving work of the programs by putting a small appropriation of $95,000 in the state budget this year to help keep the programs going.
Unfortunately, Governor Chris Christie vetoed this money!
Please help us fill the gap caused by this loss! Make a donation so these life-saving programs can keep operating and saving lives. All of the money raised will go to purchasing supplies for all New Jersey programs!
