Lee's Summit MO needs a Comfort Dog

Donation protected
The Comfort Dog program at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church will be an outreach to members, and non-members alike. Our goal will be to show the unconditional love of Jesus Christ to everyone,  with the Comfort Dog as a central element of our bridge to witnessing.  This ministry will provide our Church members a chance to get outside their own comfort zone and witness to those in need in a unique way that has been proven to work by Lutheran Church Charities.

Brief History of Organization

Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church is a 38 year old Congregation in Lee's Summit Missouri. We offer four weekly services, Sunday school, weekly Bible studies, a preschool ministry, Upward Basketball (in season), and a Church library for our 1025 members and community. Our current emphasis as a Church is to increase our community outreach.

Innovation

The Comfort Dog program is a relatively new program. It was started and is still supported by Lutheran Church Charities out of Illinois. LCC provides all of the dog and handler training in order to ensure consistency. This dog will be the first in our area, as the nearest Comfort Dog to us, Jessy Comfort Dog, resides in Concordia, MO, about an hour away.

Need

The human care need in our community is beyond words. Last year we lost four teenagers to traffic accidents, and one to suicide. We have multiple hospitals in our area that are interested in the Comfort Dog program visiting their patients. Our community has many other needs that we have not yet identified. We are praying this program reveals the love of Christ, as we serve as his hands and feet in our outreach efforts.

Impact Story

This story is not from our program, it is from Joplin MO. After the Joplin tornado I was one of the nurses who helped Immanuel Lutheran Church run their health clinic. This was my first experience with the Comfort Dogs. I was leery at first that the dogs could make a difference, so I took a reserved, wait-and-see approach. I witnessed miracles in Joplin MO in the presence of those Comfort Dogs. Children who had not spoken since the tornado....... spoke. They told the dogs their tornado experiences. They spoke of seeing Angels. Adults who had not processed emotions got down on the floor and held a dog and cried. It was the first time I had ever seen amazing healing in such a short time span after a disaster. As soon as I saw these things I was sold on the Comfort Dog program and it's healing powers. These dogs make a huge difference in communities weather it is visiting hospitals, nursing homes, daycare centers, shut ins, working funerals, or working with the bereaved. Or just simply being available for someone who needs to hug something warm, loving,  that shows unconditional LOVE. Then we can provide the Message of Jesus and his unconditional LOVE.
