Message from Family of Maddie and Felicia

My son, David, daughter in love Felicia, and my two beautiful granddaughters, Madison and Lexie, started out Saturday morning July 2nd headed for a fun filled week with their aunts, uncles & cousins in Chincoteaque Island but abruptly at 11:00 am, our life's forever changed as we knew them as they collided with a power pole in Painter, Virginia. My daughter in love, Felicia Bare, sustained massive trauma to her right arm. Thankfully with her medical training, she was coherent & strong & brave enough to have a good Samaritan tie their tie around her arm to slow the extreme loss of blood until the ambulance got there. This action probably saved her arm and her life. The ambulance arrived and knew they needed fast action and made the decision to drive to a field and have her air lifted about 70 miles away to Norfolk, VA where they have an excellent trauma center. Upon arrival at the hospital, they started the long process of rebuilding her arm. The first surgery was done to reconstruct her forearm. Titanium rods were used to hold the bones back together. The soft tissue, veins and rebuilt blood vessels were carefully repaired and put back in place. Felicia is still missing a tendon in her wrist that they hope to repair in a additional surgery by taking the tendon from another area of her body. They are still determining whether to do skin grafts or flaps to replace the massive amount of skin missing on her arm. The first surgery has to heal a little before putting the arm through the next step. They are continuing to monitor the blood flow to her hand and fingers. Felicia will have a very long road to recovery and to the use of her arm and hand. Madison, our sweet beautiful loving strong granddaughter, was reading to pass the time in the truck and leaning against the door. Upon impact, the side airbag came down on the left side of her face with the right side of her sweet beautiful face next to the glass as the window shattered from impact. Madison suffered massive trauma to the right side of her face from the forehead, around her right eye to the top of her jawbone. Madison was rendered unconscious, and does not yet remember the accident. Madison was air lifted to the Children's Hospital of The Kings Daughters in Norfolk, it is right next to the hospital Felicia is in. Madison was taken into surgery pretty quickly to remove glass and start the reconstruction work on her face. Madison also had to have a large amount of glass removed from her right shoulder and suffered a cornea abrasion to her left eye. Our sweet girl was on a ventilator for the first 4 days. She is finally breathing on her own and able to talk and build strength for the long road ahead. Madison is going to have more reconstruction work done but she has to heal some first. David & Lexie - David is physically fine but the emotional pain has been overwhelming seeing what his family has endured so far and knowing how long the road to recovery is going to be. Lexie had a sore wrist but they could not find a break, they put on a splint on to be safe and protect it incase the fracture was where they could not see it. She is a tough little thing, our Claire Bare. Our family has a long road home. They are going to need a lot of moral support and some financial help. Our main goal now is to get them stable enough and strong enough to take them home. We aren't sure how we are going to get them all home yet, but God has brought us this far, we know he will get us home. We appreciate any help you can provide and all the prayers you can say. Thank you so much from our entire family. Shari Welsh Bare
