Hi everyone, I am fundraising on behalf of x2y LGBT youth group, as I am one of their trustees.
x2y LGBT Youth Group is a small charity based in Wolverhampton. We have been going for 12 years, previously as part of larger organisations, but we only set up as an independent group 2 years ago. We provide a safe space for young people in Wolverhampton who are lesbian, gay, bi, trans or questioning their sexuality or gender identity. Every Saturday we run a drop in session for young people but we are struggling to keep this going and need your help.
We have various organisations and individuals who help us, including some who have agreed to support us over the next two or three years, and we have made bids for further funding that we hope will be successful, but this year we have a shortfall of £1000 that we need urgently, and we hope to raise a further £1000 so that we can be confident of keeping our weekly sessions running all year round.
Why do I think this is important? Research tells us that:
· LGBTQ young people face disturbingly high levels of abuse and violence
· Nearly 1 in 10 LGBTQ young people have had to leave home for reasons relating to their sexuality or gender identity
· LGBTQ young people report significantly higher levels of mental health problems including depression and anxiety, self-harm and suicidal thoughts
Here's what two young people who used to attend the group said about the impact of x2y:
'The group was vital to me, and now the group is vital to a new isolated generation of the LGBT youth'.
'The point of x2y isn’t to take in vulnerable young members of the LGBT community and keep them safe; while it does do that, it crucially gives them the tools to keep themselves safe, to deal with their issues, and to understand the wider community in which they find themselves. That’s what it has done for me.'
