Richard Bagley underwent a serious surgery two days before his 75th birthday in March this year removing a 10 lb. tumor from his abdomen, some small intestine and a kidney from his 95 lb. frame. Since late March Richard has been in and out of the hospital and assisted care facilities, which his Medi-Cal and Medicare only partially cover. He is now in a board and care facility while he undergoes five weeks of radiation therapy followed by chemotherapy. This professional care costs $3500 per month and is not covered AT ALL by his insurance. With very little in savings and a fixed income, Richard is facing very dire circumstances.
Over the years this underserved Viet Nam veteran had generously given away thousands of dollars to various homeless friends and others down on their luck, supporting those who he felt were worse off.
In 1955 Richard Bagley’s family moved to Costa Mesa from Detroit during his high school years. After studying commercial art at OCC and manning an artillery unit in Vietnam he attempted a fledgling career as a flamenco guitarist, enjoyed some success selling his original paintings, worked a series of odd jobs and long employment as the night custodian in the Costa Mesa Public School system.
In 2015, never married and without children, Bagley had poured his savings and time into a collection of vintage and historic photographs and photo albums, yearbooks, scrapbooks, menus, brochures, misc. ephemera and treasure.that had grown too burdensome and costly to organize and keep. Facing a diagnosis and treatment for laryngeal cancer, which spread into soft cell sarcoma, the 74 year old was looking to give it all away. That is when Katherine came into Richard's life, enlisted a few other passionate women to join the cause and Rescued from Recycling was born.
