Meet Claire. This sweet and fun-loving six-year-old has struggled with numerous health issues over the last four years, including seizures, developmental and speech delays, as well as a movement disorder. After years of tests and dead-ends with several specialists, Claire was recently tested at Mayo Clinic. The doctors at Mayo have diagnosed her with rare genetic disorder causing many of her symptoms: Glucose Transporter Type 1 Deficiency Syndrome (Glut1 Deficiency).

Glut1 Deficiency impairs brain metabolism due to an inefficient transport of glucose. Essentially, this disorder starves the brain of energy that is imperative for its growth and proper functioning.

Because there are only a few hundred people worldwide known to have this disorder, there is neither in-depth research nor a cure for this condition. The standard treatment for Glut1 Deficiency requires a strict ketogenic diet. Claire and her family are currently at Mayo for further testing, implementation of Claire's new diet as well as an Epilepsy study. The diet will help to improve Claire's symptoms and optimize her learning development from this point forward.

With multiple trips to Mayo, the Justice family has incurred not only medical debt related to Claire's condition, but costs of traveling to Minnesota, meals and lodging for the weeks in which they stay while Claire is tested and treated. In addition to each trip costing several thousand dollars, Aaron and April are also missing work for the weeks that they are gone.
